Wirral’s train services link efficiently into the Merseyside rail network, providing fast access to Liverpool Lime Street station, which provides direct connections to London and other major cities via the West Coast Mainline.
The average journey time between Liverpool Lime Street and London Euston is around 2½ hours, with a fastest time of 2 hours 9 minutes. All services are provided by Virgin's 125mph Pendolino tilting electric trains.
Trans-Pennine trains also operate from Liverpool Lime Street, offering a direct service to Manchester, Birmingham, Preston and the North.
3MG is a £65million freight distribution park at West Bank Dock, Liverpool, linking warehousing with the rail network. Comprising distribution and industrial space, the first buildings are due for completion in 2007.
The development is designed to create improved road and rail infrastructure and high specification distribution units from 2,252 sq m (35,000 sq ft) up to 46,452 sq m (500,000 sq ft). It is predicted that around 500,000 tonnes of freight will be transferred from road to rail.
Merseyrail's internal network is one of the most intensively used in the UK, with 67 Merseyrail stations and 600 train services running daily (Monday-Friday). This includes five underground stations in Liverpool city centre and 6.5 miles of tunnels – unparalleled in comparison to other UK cities outside London.
